About Julia Watson

Designer, academic and author, Julia is a leading expert on indigenous technologies, as seen in her book Lo-TEK: Design by Radical Indigenism, published by TASCHEN. She teaches urban design at Harvard University and Columbia University while also leading a landscape, and urban design studio: Julia Watson LLC, and collaborating with French horticulturist Marie Salembier, as Watson Salembier.

After graduating from Harvard with the highest award for her work on conserving spiritual landscapes, she went on to begin her practice designing Bali’s first UNESCO world heritage site. She has co-authored a spiritual guidebook for the Bali’s UNESCO World Heritage site with Dr. J. Stephen Lansing.

Julia approaches design as rewilding, with a portfolio of public projects including the El Segundo Gateway, the Great Barrier Reef Resilience Initiative, and private clients including the owners of PACE Galleries and Marfa Ballroom, the art collector Artur Walther, the artist Rashid Johnson, and in locations like Mulholland Estate, LA.

She has spoken at TED Uncharted and the Venice Biennale, is a fellow of Summit REALITY & Pop!tech, received a Christensen Fund for her work in conserving Bali’s World Heritage, and was a Disruptive By Design Ambassador for WIRED.
