UQ alumnus, Kim Baber (MPhil 2012, BArchDes 2001) has recently returned to the School, teaching Architectural Design and Masters Research Studios at the Collaborative-Laboratory Workshop.
Establishing his own Architecture and Public Art curating practice, with partner Monique Baber in 2013, Baber Studio has received both awards and recognition through publication for several completed projects.
Their ‘Shutter House’ residential project and the ‘MPC’ interior fit-out have received regional and state awards from the Australian Institute of Architects. Kim Baber has also been awarded the Australian Institute of Architects’ Queensland Emerging Architect for 2014. The Emerging Architect Prize recognizes an emerging architect’s individual contribution to architectural practice, education, design excellence and community based projects.
Kim’s time spent teaching within the School of Architecture will culminate with the student exhibition ‘Fish Lane Follies.’
‘Fish Lane Follies’ is an installation exhibition that showcases innovative plywood structures created by Masters of Architecture students from the School of Architecture.
The installations showcase the school’s design and research innovation and prototyping capability. The event is organised by the University of Queensland in collaboration with Baber Studio.
‘Fish Lane Follies’ contributes to the overall master planning for Fish Lane activation and Brisbane City Council’s vision for vibrant laneways designed by Archipelago architects. Sited publically, these experimental ‘follies’ create intrigue and discovery along the laneway. These installations occupy the undiscovered small spaces of the lane and explore an experimental architecture of plywood ‘scales and skin’.
“‘Fish Lane Follies’ investigates both the physical construction of the prototype shell structures and their role as urban activators in promoting public activity. By siting these structures in the built environment we anticipate real public engagement and response to these experimental forms. The exhibition also gives students an opportunity to exhibit their work publically and contribute to laneway activation,” Kim said.
The exhibition opens with a public event on Friday 28th August at 6pm, where visitors can enjoy an evening of live music, drinks and local food.
Official invitations to be published shortly.
