Course Description

ARCH7017 Advanced Architectural Design: Architecture and Urban Infrastructure is a 4-unit Design studio course, which counts the Part B requirements of the Master of Architecture (MArch) program.

This offering of ARCH7017 is an intensive Design Studio with an embedded fieldtrip to Shanghai, funded by the Endeavour Leadership Program (ELP).  It includes a workshop on Mandarin language, culture and etiquette, which will assist students with their fieldtrip. This intensive studio is designed for curious and ambitious students, who aim to gain understanding of architecture and urban design in Asia and liaise with local partners in China.

As a result of the increasing number and dimension of mega-scale developments in Asia-Pacific cities, small scale interventions that reclaim collective spaces for spontaneous human interaction are increasingly needed to guarantee expression of individual freedom. This intensive design studio will discuss and reflect on how urban infrastructure in Shanghai is used and experienced by people. We will focus on the agency of design as a way to challenge large urban and infrastructural plans, as an effective way to give a greater degree of flexibility and empathy to the global city. With a population of nearly 25 million people, Shanghai is the symbol of China’s thriving economic development. While working in the cosmopolitan center of Shanghai, students will be asked to explore and embrace the big urban scale and its relationship with people inhabiting it.

Selected students will received an ELP grant of $3,500 AUD: $2,500 AUD + $1,000 AUD*.  $2,500 which will go towards covering the expenses of the field-trip (Chinese visa, flights, accommodation, meals, local transportation, etc.).  Some or all of this grant may be used on behalf of the student towards group bookings.  All decisions regarding group bookings/activities will be made in the best interest of the student-group. Group bookings/activities will mainly be booked through Campus Travel.  The remaining $1,000 AUD will be used towards the compulsory course of Chinese language and culture, developed in collaboration with the UQ Institute of Modern Languages.  Selected students must accept both components of the grant ($2,500 AUD + $1,000 AUD).

It is a requirement that you have a passport that is valid at least 6 months beyond the 23 February 2020 departure date.
