Robin Finlay Gibson (1930-2014) is one of Qld’s most distinguished architects, having raised the community’s understanding and appreciation of architecture through his advocacy and consistent quality of his many public and private projects. Apart for the Queensland Cultural Centre, Gibson’s architectural output and career remain largely unstudied. Since his death in 2014, ATCH has been working to determine the range and usefulness of primary resources – architectural plans, drawings, models, photographs and correspondence – relating to Gibson’s life and career. These sources include the working collection of the practice recently donated by the Gibson family to the Fryer Library at the University of Queensland. This research has resulted in new book, to be published in 2020, which will document aspects of Gibson’s life and work. The seminar will present three papers from the book.

With the impending expansion of the School of Architecture into a CBD location, this seminar is an opportune forum to examine the School’s strengths and capabilities in the evolving field of cultural heritage. This includes recent conferences, publications and research projects in collaboration with government and practice. The seminar will be presented as a round table where each participant will briefly outline their current cultural heritage projects (what is going on?) and propose opportunities for the future (where are we going?).

In this seminar, Susan will discuss the forthcoming book Campus: Building Modern Australian Universities (UWA Press, 2021) the major outcome of a recently completed ARC Discovery Project. She will discuss select parts of the book including the policy context of the expansion of higher education in Australia in the post-WWII period, the planning and architecture of the ‘gumtree’ universities built in the 1960s and 70s, and the evolution of campus landscapes. She will also discuss the experience of working on a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional research project, and ponder the question of what to do with an abundance of research and archival material when the project comes to an end!

Architecture does more than establish spatial arrangements that exclude or enclose non-human animals, proscribing their movement and contact with their own kind and other species. It is a cultural and representational practice imbued with history and meaning. Architecture cues and curates the encounter between humans and animals. The research we are each doing has in common the conviction that architecture is a component technology in the shaping of animal identities and multispecies communities. Our shared ambition is to reveal key theoretical and material moments in the longstanding engagement humans have had with other animals through architecture.
